This paper will discuss how Hydro One, owners and maintainers of Ontario Canada's electricity transmission and distribution systems, is implementing Enterprise-GIS using a Service Oriented Architecture and GIS Web Services. The Hydro One network is one of the ten largest electricity transmission and distribution systems in North America with over 28,600km grid and interconnection transmission and a 122,800km distribution system.

Electricity transmission and distribution (T&D) firms are faced with making strategic IT investments in times of cost-reduction, increased competition and increased regulatory obligations while managing a geographically vast service area with dispersed field units. GIS is a strategic IT tool which is indispensable for a T&D company's organizational units including operations, asset management, planning and forecasting, new designs and environmental assessment. The onset of mobile technologies offers an opportunity to further decentralize the operations such as new designs and asset data recording to field units thus automating numerous processes.
