Abstract
Septic Tank Locations and Proximity to Creeks, San Mateo County Track: Environmental Management Author(s): Erdmann Rogge Septic tanks are one of the most common ways to dispose of sewage in rural areas of San Mateo County. Most records on septic tanks are in paper format, some of which are sketchy. This decreases an inspector's ability to properly assess the number of systems in an area and when they are due for inspection. Furthermore, potential effluence from septic systems impacting local creeks is a concern. With a grant from the California Coastal Conservancy we developed an Access database linked to ArcGIS that contains information on the type, current condition and location of septic tanks. Information was gathered by field verification of paper records and use of a GPS, laser range finder and georectified aerial photography. After all 5,267 septic tanks in the county were located, their proximity to creeks was determined. About 6.5 percent fall within 100 feet of a creek and 2.1 percent within 50 feet.
