Decision Support for the Las Vegas Long-Range Transit Plan
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Daniel Moreno

Explosive population, employment, and economic growth in Southern Nevada is placing huge demands on the existing transportation system. Transit improvements will help meet projected demand and improve quality of life. To support the Las Vegas Valley Long Range Transit Plan, an evaluation of more than eighty corridors produced a rating and ranking, based on overall suitability for transit development. The analysis used a combination of GIS technology and third party decision science software. ArcGIS 9 ModelBuilder was used to develop models that measured and captured corridor characteristics, such as demographics, employment, land use, and right-of-way availability. These measurements were input into decision science software that allowed the weighting of criteria and calculated composite suitability scores for the study corridors. The method and tools employed in this project facilitated a systematic and streamlined evaluation of several alternatives across many variables. The geoprocessing model is transportable to other transit agencies with appropriate refinements based on local conditions and study goals.
