The Inclusion of Historical Data in the National Elevation Dataset
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Author(s): Michael Oimoen

This paper will explore the possibility of adding a temporal component to the National Elevation Dataset (NED). While new elevation models are most often acquired with an eye toward improving data resolution and quality, they may also describe an altered surface. In areas where the accuracy of historic data is sufficiently high, computing the differences between two or more datasets will reveal the evolution of the landscape. The example of Mt. St. Helens will be presented in detail.
