Abstract
Using Demographic Analysis to Determine Park and Open Space Equity Track: Modeling Author(s): Kenneth Duncan, Breece Robertson The national nonprofit organization Trust for Public Land (TPL) helps conserve land for recreation and spiritual nourishment to improve the health and quality of life of American communities. Using ArcGIS 9 ModelBuilder software, TPL created a suite of models to measure park and open space equity in urban settings. Using U.S. Census demographic estimates and TPL's park and open space database, TPL identifies where the park and open space "access" and "gaps" are in some of the largest cities across the United States. Based on buffer distances to park and open spaces, the models generate overall demographic profiles of different segments of the population "being served" and "not served" by existing park and open spaces. By identifying where the park and open space "gaps" exist in cities, TPL benefits from an increased level of efficiency in conservation prioritization.
