Helping Engineers Move into the GIS World
Track: Architecture, Engineering, and Construction
Author(s): Richard Winterfield

Many engineers operate in a CAD-based world. Yet, they want and need the geospatial intelligence and flexibility that GIS provides. This paper will present municipal sanitary sewer and stream assessment projects and a storm sewer project at a military installation that effectively employed GIS to enhance the quality of the project. A key challenge to success is effectively communicating with the engineers. Achieving consensus on implementing linear referencing for stream assessment, developing an acceptable data model for sanitary sewer, and prioritizing areas for storm sewer rehabilitation provided opportunities for effective communication or miscommunication. The results of these projects and the process to complete them will be discussed highlighting effective strategies and lessons learned in helping engineers move into the GIS world.
