Modeling the Propagation of DEM Uncertainty on Flood Inundation Depths
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Musa Yilmaz

In the last decade, integration of GIS with flood studies has shown significant benefits, but the problems of error propagation in flood analysis have also been recognized lately. Since all GIS datasets suffer from error, when they are used as input to a GIS operation, the errors in the input propagate to the output. Similarly in GIS integrated flood studies, errors inherent in the DEM will propagate through the analysis and to all its outputs. In a previous study, presented at the 2004 Esri UC, a methodology named UPM was presented for evaluation of DEM uncertainty by modeling its propagation in flood inundation. In UPM, hydraulic computations are performed by integrating ArcView and HEC-RAS, and uncertainty propagation is modeled using Monte Carlo Simulations. This study utilizes the same methodology, but this time, uncertainty propagation is based on the depth of inundation.
