Abstract
The Birth of a National Geographic Map Track: Cartography and Map Production Author(s): Windy Robertson, Allen Carroll Many of us have fond childhood memories of thumbing through the pages of National Geographic Magazine. If we were lucky, we'd find a map supplement tucked between those pages. Carefully unfolding one of these meticulously hand-drawn maps we would prepare to be transported to exotic lands. Of course, these days, the maps are digitally created using satellite imagery, digital relief, and 3D modeling, and GIS plays an integral role in the process. In this presentation we will walk you through the methodology used to create a National Geographic map. From concept to completion, GIS provides us with valuable tools that enhance our ability to create maps that are both beautiful and educational--maps that we hope will light up the imagination of the next generation of explorers.
