Using Geospatial Technologies to Prioritize Conservation Practices
Track: Agriculture
Author(s): Quentin Rund

Having a conservation plan is a key component for farmers who want to participate in federal conservation programs like EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program) and CSP (Conservation Security Program). Creating a conservation plan for a farm helps farmers to realize what conservation problems exist on their farm. It also provides them with a plan for implementing practices to rectify the problems. Geospatial technologies can be used to help farmers and NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) employees identify and prioritize problem areas. Using a combination of remote sensing, topography, and spatial modeling, a GIS can provide a quick inventory of a farmer's fields and help identify where conservation practices are most needed. This presentation will explain how we have used these geospatial technologies to identify priority areas for conservation practices.
