The Coastal GeoToolbox: Making Coastal Data Accessible through ArcMap Customization
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): Arthur Rodriguez

In an effort to document changes in barrier island beaches, the National Park Service (NPS) Northeast Coastal & Barrier Network (NCBN) is monitoring a set of coastal geomorphologic indicators. Two of the most important and readily available datasets are horizontal shoreline position and beach and dune topography. In an effort to make these data more accessible to NPS researchers and managers, the Coastal GeoToolbox was created. The toolbox is a GIS-based collection of automated procedures intended to simplify access to and use of geomorphologic data. The Toolbox was created with the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming language and ArcGIS 8.3. It is composed of a customized ArcMap (.mxd) document that provides a suite of commonly used visualization and analysis tools. Included in the applications are routines for shoreline and topographic change analyses, standardized legends for LiDAR generated grid data, and appending topographic data to point and polygon shapefiles.
