Mapping Multibeam Bathymetry Data around the Main Hawaiian Islands
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): Alyssa Aaby

Scientists at the University of Hawaii at Manoa have collected a large amount of multibeam data from seafloor locations around the world. However, this data has been collected at widely different scales, using different sonar systems, and is stored in various formats. This paper will focus on how multibeam data from around the eight main Hawaiian Islands were converted from Generic Mapping Tool (GMT)-style grids into Arc formats, organized and stored in a geodatabase, and queried and mapped in ArcMap to analyze data quality. In doing so, we plan to foster easier data sharing, increased compatibility with other marine data, and allow for future data accessibility by the general public through the Internet.
