Use of ArcGIS for Facilities Management in Watershed Management Programs
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): James Benson, Melissa Beristain, Lisa Swain

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) develops and implements numerous watershed management programs to protect the City's unfiltered drinking water supply and its watershed. Many of these programs are mandated by USEPA to ensure the quality of the City's water supply. Inspection and maintenance activities, particularly those relating to stormwater management facilities, are critical to the success of the water supply protection programs. To manage these activities, the Bureau of Water Supply implemented a specialized inspection and maintenance application that would support facilities management, both in the office and the field. The Computer Assisted Facility Management application initiates inspections, downloads geospatial data into a field device, supports field collection of data, and uploads data into a geodatabase in the office application. It also allows the user to initiate any related maintenance activities through the issuance of work orders. The application was built using ArcGIS, Excel, and ArcPad.
