Mobile Data Collection: Lessons for a Bus Stop Inventory
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Kris Bezdecny, Martin Catala

The Escambia County Area Transit (ECAT) performed a system-wide analysis of its transit system. A key to this analysis was an on-board survey which required an up-to-date bus stop inventory. ECAT's bus stop inventory was incomplete, and many stops were damaged by Hurricane Ivan. Consequently, ECAT needed an accurate bus stop inventory. Utilizing ArcPad and ArcGIS 9, a bus stop inventory was collected with GPS enabled PDA units. The data was then utilized for an on-board survey. The data collection efforts and the efficiencies created using ArcPad Application Builder were streamlined from previous data collection efforts. Additionally, the bus stop inventory serves as the beginning of an ongoing and continuous maintenance effort by the transit agency. The presentation will reflect on the efficiencies of using the technologies as well as the lessons learned from the effort.
