GIS, Critical Notification Technology Join Forces for Improved Public Safety
Track: Disaster Mangagement and Emergency Response
Author(s): Craig Allen

Public safety officials and local residents of Mecklenburg County (NC)

have come to expect rapid, accurate communication in times of crisis. The county's extensive use of critical notification technology, specifically that of DCC (Dialogic Communications Corporation), coupled with advanced GIS software, has proven to be most valuable when situations threaten public safety or require immediate action. The combined technologies automate communications with first responders, government officials and communities-at-risk, rapidly providing information or instruction through all available devices (e.g., phone, pager, fax). GIS integration enables Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management to securely view area maps via the Internet, then identify key locations requiring notification.
