Abstract
Remote Sensing: The Next Best Thing to Being There Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): Victoria Provenza, Jeff Young Tasked by a delegation of U.S. Government officials including Secretary of State Colin Powell, the United States Forest Service, and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service are providing technical assistance to the nation of Gabon to assist local officials in the management of the Gabonese National Park System. While half a world away, GIS specialists in the United States are mentoring natural resource managers in the Congo by teaching them to use remote sensing data for classifying vegetation types and management zones. This presentation will illustrate how remote sensing is playing a critical role in the preservation of the Congo.
