Harnessing the NJ Geographic Information Network's Distributed, Service Oriented Architecture
Track: New Technology and System Integration
Author(s): Brian Embley

The New Jersey Geographic Information (NJGIN) is a loose knit fabric of data, map and geoprocessing services hosted at distributed locations by State, County and City government. The NJGIN Partner Portal web application, created by the NJ Office of GIS and first implemented at Atlantic County, NJ, seamlessly consumes geospatial services hosted by the County in Atlantic City, NJ, from the NJ Office of GIS in Trenton, NJ, and also from an out of state commercial data provider. Aimed at fostering economic development opportunities, the NJGIN Partner Portal transparently utilizes these distributed services to provide site location, site mapping, and site reporting functions. After initial success at Atlantic County, a tailored Partner Portal has been rolled out at each new local government data node. In 2005, 9 more County partners have joined the partnership, each hosting its version of the Partner Portal.
