Power Plant Suitability Analysis Made Easier with ModelBuilder
Track: Electric and Gas
Author(s): Jennifer Chester

Population growth and new technology have resulted in an increased demand from consumers for reliable electricity. Many utility companies have found that building new power plants is the only way to meet this increased need. Siting facilities such as power plants often involves analyzing data covering tens of thousands of square miles across several states. Our project approach focuses on utilizing GIS to identify suitable site locations within a project area or service territory that balance environmental impacts with development costs. This paper will discuss how GIS and tools such as ModelBuilder can be utilized in the process of siting a power plant. Given the very large project study areas, the use of GIS is critical in accurately and efficiently identifying site alternatives that meet the environmental, engineering, and financial objectives of the project.
