Implementing Best Practices for Web Map Development at NBII-SAIN
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Wolf Naegeli

The Southern Appalachian Information Node of the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII-SAIN) has a growing number of projects that depend on multiple Web mapping applications and Internet map services. SAIN serves a broad cross-section of professional, educational, and general-public users who have very diverse information needs. Skill levels range from novice to expert. SAIN's range of Web mapping applications is tailored to the diverse needs of its user community. Maintaining and keeping track of services, applications, hundreds of data layers, their production and use status, and their associated metadata are major challenges. SAIN also strives to make its Web mapping applications more interactive and capable of advanced data mining. An important goal is to maintain high levels of consistency in user-interface look and feel, functionality of applications, and in their internal structure, as more developers become involved in building, maintaining, and customizing them.
