The Maryland Automated Geographic Information System: Reflections after 30 Years
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): John Morgan, III

The Maryland Automated Geographic Information System (MAGI) was one of the first statewide geographic information systems. MAGI was developed in 1973-74 by the Maryland Department of State Planning using Esri's GRID software. The purpose of MAGI was to assist in the development of a state land use plan for Maryland. This presentation will describe the procedures used to develop MAGI's raster database and to prepare maps. The presentation will also reflect on the fact that while hardware and software have changed dramatically over the past 30 years, most of the data problems encountered during the development of MAGI in the early 1970s are still with us today. Finally, an ArcIMS application that documents the importance of MAGI within the 'Esri Timeline' will be unveiled.
