Capturing Shape M Value Solutions inside ArcPad for DOT
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Glenn Condon, tim obrien

Linear route calculations inside Esri software have been a strong area of focus for vertical markets in Transportation, Oil, Gas, and other areas that require an "M" measurement value to be captured inside a shapefile. This paper will discuss how code was created within an ArcPad work order form at the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT). ArcPad coupled with GPS is used to capture features with geometric and custom attributes. Custom code was required to capture milepost "M" measurement values of the features along the linear route. There are many factors that can influence the calculation of the "M" value in a shapefile. Review of the mathematical assumptions made in this solution will be noted. Additionally, the ROI and what problems that were encountered will be addressed. Users needing to perform dynamic segmentation and capture features along a linear routes using ArcPad will find this paper helpful.
