Use of GIS in Mapping and Planning the Rhonda Estate
Track: Health and Human Services
Author(s): Onyango Ruth

Ronda estate in Nakuru town of Kenya is a poverty area that is fast expanding. The estate, which was once considered to be far from the town centre, was not incorporated during the municipal planning for clean water supply and sewage system. The major problems faced by the area are the lack of clean water supply and sewage system and the presence of fault lines, which leads to land subsidence. The area has mainly temporary houses with a small percentage of semi permanent and permanent houses. The road network is very poor and mining is carried out in the area. The objective of this project was to survey and map the area, then, considering the problems and possible minimum cost solutions, provide a plan for the estate for better human settlement. In mapping the area, the following factors were taken into account: Distance from the fault lines, distance from the riverbank, distance from the mines and quarry, and accessibility to infrastructure. Considering that the population in Ronda estate is of low income, the improved housing units must remain affordable to the population. This is to avoid displacing them and hence transferring the problem somewhere else.
