Abstract
Mapping Public Housing in Los Angeles County Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Mario Vazquez, Liz Wojdak The Los Angeles County Community Development Commission (LACDC) has developed partnerships with local colleges to map the seventy public housing sites managed by the Housing Authority of the County of Los Angeles (HACoLA) through the Service-Learning program. LACDC supplies GPS equipment and training for the students. The students gain experience in using GPS equipment while giving service back to their community and receiving college credit for their participation. The data gathered will be used to create base layers for each facility allowing HACoLA to better serve the tenants living at the sites. Additionally, the data collected will be used for emergency response and law enforcement purposes as GIS data for these public housing sites did not exist prior to this project anywhere within the county thus slowing response time to the sites. This presentation will focus on how to develop partnerships and the lessons learned in using this approach.
