Georeferenced Inventory and Condition Assessment for Road Network
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Anthony Kimani

Effective and efficient management of physical infrastructure requires reliable, adequate, and up-to-date inventory of the asset with its current state or condition. In most cases this kind of information is not readily available or is stored in formats that do not offer easy retrieval and application. During the last three years the Ministry of Roads and Public Works together with the World Bank has supported the development and implementation of a project to completely overhaul the way it collects, stores and makes available road inventory and condition data. In this exercise, inventory and condition data was collected for 63,000 odd kilometers of classified roads in the country together with other road related assets like bridges, culverts, and traffic signs. A scheme was devised and implemented for storing and retrieving all data using GIS and database technology, and a road network rehabilitation and maintenance program developed.
