Application of GIS Planning of the Ngara Neighborhood
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Casty Njororge

Ngara is characterized by its proximity to Nairobi's central business district and the Nairobi River. It is also a major thoroughfare for large volumes of vehicular traffic from the city centre to residential areas in the greater Nairobi region and further into the northern parts of the country. Along the banks of the Nairobi River, motor vehicle mechanics ply their trade taking advantage of the proximity to River Road popular for its numerous motor vehicle spare parts shops. The wide range of factors/influences shaping the structure of Ngara area and other urban areas requires an analysis tool that takes cognizance of the interplay that exists between them. Furthermore, the large number of stakeholders shaping the urban environment requires coordination that only an efficient spatial data management system can handle. GIS tools were used to determine conflict areas and provide information for the decision makers to propose suitable interventions.
