The Challenges of GIS Education at Technical Level in Kenya
Track: Education
Author(s): Shabola Linus

In recent years GIS has become a fundamental tool in various fields such as natural resource management, urban planning, environmental assessment, facilities management, habitat analysis, disaster response, regional planning, business development, etc. The Kenya Polytechnic trains students at a technical level in various disciplines, such as Survey & Mapping, Building & Civil Engineering, Environmental Management, Business studies, Institutional Management, Health Sciences, etc. Since GIS is a valuable tool in all of these disciplines, GIS education is now more than ever relevant and should be incorporated in the different academic departments of The Kenya Polytechnic. Therefore, GIS educators are faced with the challenge of ensuring that the students are adequately equipped to deal with real world problems encountered in their different professional fields. This paper aims at outlining some of the challenges of the GIS-education at a technical level and is specifically based upon the experiences of the Kenya Polytechnic.
