Abstract
Greenprint Modeling: A Strategic Approach to Land Conservation Planning Track: Modeling Author(s): Breece Robertson, Brenda Faber The Trust for Public Land (TPL) has developed a hierarchical, multi-criteria modeling framework for conservation priority assessment. The TPL Greenprint Model assists communities in making informed decisions about land conservation priorities. The model provides a systematic approach for identifying lands that offer highest conservation benefit based on locally identified criteria. The model is based on ArcGIS 9 ModelBuilder. The model is used interactively to engage stakeholders in a collaborative effort to define conservation priorities. Through this process, model criteria are developed that reflect regionally distinctive resources and objectives. Local and regional datasets are assembled to characterize each criterion. Model outputs are expressed in terms of conservation value, ranging from low to high across the region. A hierarchical model structure combines the criteria building blocks into composite conservation priority maps, using the stakeholder-defined relative weightings. Alternative conservation scenarios can be explored by modifying the relative importance of the criteria.
