Developing the Road Model for NC Department of Transportation
Track: Transportation
Author(s): John Farley, Jun Wu

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) depends on information on its state maintained roads for much of its core business. As such, the NCDOT has maintained this information in various formats and platforms over the years. Currently information is being developed and maintained in MicroStation files, Esri shapefiles and coverages, Oracle tables, and other various flat files. The current formats have led to multiple, independent, and unconnected data sets hampering business operations throughout NCDOT. In order to improve business operations, a geodatabase model was developed to provide a single, uniform, and widely available model that reduces duplication and increases business operation efficiency. One of the most important aspects of this model and improved efficiency is the ability, through linear referencing, to provide a basic framework for all customers to "attach their data to" so that all data can be accessed and shared in a standardized manner.
