Roundabout--Iterative Mapping in Lafayette Parish Assessor's Office
Track: Cadastral and Land Records
Author(s): Winchester Jordan

If you have an up-to-date plat book for your county or municipality, congratulations. However, what about the rest of us? How do we transform convoluted property descriptions and blurry plats into an accurate digital parcel layer? How do we align it with our raster layer without expending scarce resources on consultants? The answer is iterations. This presentation will demonstrate the iterative parcel mapping process developed and used in the Lafayette Parish (LA) Assessor's Office. With a small full-time staff, this process is designed to make the most of student interns who may only be around for a single semester. Dividing the tasks of abstraction and placement process into small, achievable goals, the iterative method not only yields tangible results but also provides a usable provisional product while work continues on those elusive "Not on Books" parcels.
