An Object-Oriented Approach to Developing Interactive Mapping Applications
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Daniel Flyte

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is San Diego's principal regional planning agency, committed to taking progressive, action-oriented approaches to land use and transportation planning, demographic and economic forecasting, growth management, habitat conservation planning, traffic management, and criminal justice research. As an agency dedicated to serving the public, we strive to continuously provide high quality and dependable data, maps, and services. This not only challenges us to understand the most effective means of serving our data consumers but also to develop intelligent processes and solutions to efficiently service them. In order to deliver demographic and economic data in a useful and meaningful manner to our users, we have redeveloped the SANDAG Demographic and Economic Mapping System (DEMS). DEMS is a dynamic, database driven C##/ASP .NET interactive mapping application employing ArcIMS and ArcSDE. It is the result of object-oriented analysis and design, with maintainability, performance, and reusability as its chief objectives.
