Transportation Monitoring and Mitigation in a Growing City Using GIS
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Lawrence Marcus, Jose-Rodaniel Cruz

How can a small city experiencing rapid growth and development maintain and improve the quality of its transportation system? With the advent of development comes the reality of more volume and possibly, congestion. The City of Rockville has been building its GIS system for the past four years and is now utilizing it to analyze its transportation system. City staff uses GPS, Pocket PCs and powerful GIS computers for such operations as multimodal analysis, traffic forecasting and modeling, facilities inventory, and tracking of performance measures. GIS tools used include the 3D Analyst, Network Analyst, Spatial, and Image Analysis extensions. The City GIS team consists of planners, engineers, and geographers who are well versed in GIS skills and are able to completely take advantage of what these tools have to offer.
