SAS and GIS: The Colliding of Worlds
Track: Education
Author(s): Amy Kletzien

At CADE, within the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, research projects utilize both SAS and GIS technology through querying and preparing its clients' public health data with SAS V8, then exporting that data into ArcGIS 9 to identify and illustrate spatial relationships. Dynamic maps and data are then uploaded to a secure, password-protected server for clients to view (ArcIMS 9). In partnership with the Illinois Center for Public Health Preparedness, CADE has developed a Learning Management System (LMS) for a number of states, cities and centers. The LMS is a customized online solution designed to assist agencies in their objective of emergency preparedness through competency assessment and training. GIS has been integrated with the LMS to map the competency differences and similarities between health departments at county, regional, and state levels. This project intertwines SQL Server, SAS, ArcGIS, and ArcIMS technologies.
