Abstract
Leveraging ArcGIS to Automate Weed Management Activities: A Case Study Track: Agriculture Author(s): Thomas Ndanyi, John Gendron To cope with budget cuts and reduced man-power, California's Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) GIS Lab leveraged Esri's automation capabilities to significantly reduce administrative and logistic overhead inherent in data flow between field data capture and output dissemination (reports, maps, etc.). Data capture where noxious weeds are surveyed, detected, controlled and mapped uses GPS and other input templates. Uploaded data is parsed into a database for subsequent mapping, analysis and reporting using ArcGIS and ArcIMS, leveraging VBA and Visual Basic programming in a single user-friendly application. CDFA's GIS Lab has successfully mapped historic and current known infestations and rolled out programs for their control and eradication in California thus fulfilling one of its mandates of ensuring that agriculture, the mainstay of California, continues to be productive. The application is scalable for use within and outside CDFA. This session will highlight methods used to implement this program.
