The U.S. National Park Service Pacific Islands Coral Reef Program (PICRP), in conjunction with the Pacific Islands Network Inventory and Monitoring Program, is building a marine geodatabase to provide decision support to resource managers at Pacific Islands National Parks. This project is being developed using the ArcGIS marine data model. The goals for the geodatabase includes ease of use, interoperability and uniformity within NPS. Serving as a central source of information on marine data and metadata from within and around park units, this marine database will support inventory, monitoring and research efforts. In addition, this geodatabase will enhance the scientific credibility and timeliness of NPS decisions regarding marine management and conservation. Preliminary results of this marine geodatabase effort will be discussed, focusing on examples from a network of National Parks and Marine Protected Areas on the Kona Coast of Hawai'i Island.
