Enabling Cost-Effective W/WW GIS Data Migration Utilizing Geoprocessing and ModelBuilder
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Dominic Strollo, Mark Nelson

Bonita Springs Utilities (Utility), a progressive utility in Southwest Florida, serves water and wastewater (w/ww) to one of the nations fastest growing metropolitan areas. Consequently, the Utility must provide quality, responsive services to its customers. The Utility traditionally maintained all of its w/ww information in CAD. In order to improve its overall efficiency, the Utility made the move to ArcGIS and ArcSDE 9. Custom w/ww geodatabases were developed to better represent the Utility's infrastructure. Utilizing Geoprocessing and a ModelBuilder application, CAD data was migrated directly into the geodatabase in a single step. This ModelBuilder application is greatly reducing the time and costs associated with the persistent updates to the w/ww network from the continual expansion and updates of utility services. A seamless update process was also developed for the Utility's third-party customer service application to reflect the addition/subtraction of meters directly into the w/ww geodatabase.
