Abstract
Supporting Humanitarian Activities: Operational Assistance and Security Information System Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): Reto Haeni International relief and development organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), military forces, as well as the civilian populace, face more and more operational and movement restrictions in countries where humanitarian aid is provided. The result is a work environment that is more dangerous than previously experienced by the international community. Shortcomings in accessible security information is currently experienced in Darfur, Nepal, Afghanistan and Iraq among others. Having identified this need, a secure, Internet-enabled information system is being developed to provide participating organizations with a true common operational picture of the security and accessibility situation. This system focuses upon the information needs of organization-level security officers and provides aggregated information to donors to support their decision making regarding whether the security situation in a specific area allows projects to be funded. Through this system a current, accessible, and understandable portrayal of the operational situation is made available on a daily basis.
