MapAction in Action
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): David Spackman

The presentation will cover a background briefing on MapAction, a look at the team's experiences in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the tsunami, and some aspects connected with map production in the field. MapAction is a UK-registered charity whose purpose is to deploy trained teams of specialised volunteers to humanitarian relief operations in order to map the situation at regular intervals as a crisis unfolds. A MapAction team deployed to Sri Lanka soon after the tsunami disaster and stayed for three weeks, operating as an emergency mapping resource for the Sri Lankan government. MapAction established from scratch a mapping cell in the Centre for National Operations. The team trained local personnel in emergency mapping techniques so they could replace the MapAction team on departure. The team also initiated a process to harness the professional mapping community within Sri Lanka to help in the reconstruction phase of the country. MapAction used ArcGIS as a main mapping tool and are planning to use ArcIMS to improve information dissemination as well as ArcSDE to store all data in a database. Data capture comes from a variety of sources, and map production is carried out using templates to produce a standardised product. A number of technical issues have been encountered that the team has addressed.
