ArcGIS/DIS Integration
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Danny Bauch

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the work performed to integrate support for the IEEE Standard for Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) into ArcGIS Desktop. This work is being accomplished to allow users to review, and ultimately control and manage simulations from within the ArcGIS environment. In the past, custom mapping tools such as Arena (a mapping tool developed at the JIOC) have been used for this purpose. By providing a DIS custom layer and related tools, we are able to allow users to interact with interactive simulations from within the familiar ArcMap environment. This paper will address the architectural issues relating to the solution and demonstrate the general applicability of this approach. Topics covered will include DIS, ArcObjects Programming, and .NET extensions for ArcGIS.
