Arc Hydro at the South West Florida Water Management District
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Diane Burdick

Since its establishment in 1960, the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) has been involved in numerous watershed studies throughout its 16-county jurisdictional area. The primary focus of these studies has been the establishment of flood plains and levels of service in order to affect flood protection and storm water management. The SWFWMD coordinates these efforts with other local, regional, state and federal agencies including participating as a Cooperative Technical Partner with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the update of the Flood Insurance Rate Map products.

The development and management of the data required to support this program at the SWFWMD has been an increasing complex task. The SWFWMD developed its Guidelines and Specifications for gathering and managing data based on the Esri coverage format. With the introduction of the Arc Hydro data model, the SWFWMD has migrated from the coverage format to the geodatabase format based on the Arc Hydro model. Various tools were developed in coordination with Esri to support the population and maintenance of the SWFWMD Arc Hydro model.
