MPS Atlas and the Forest Service Carto-Tools Program
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Author(s): William Krausmann, Karen Nabity

The USDA Forest Service Carto-Tools program will provide the agency with a simplified mapping tool. The Program has three components. First, the Carto-Tools program is promoting the development of standardized GIS data and map symbology across the Forest Service. The second element involves implementation of the Geospatial Interface (GI). The GI is a Forest Service software product that will provide resource specialists with access to standardized natural resource data anywhere in the National Forest System. The final component of the Carto-Tools Program is MPS Atlas. MPS Atlas is a new product developed by Esri with support from the USDA Forest Service. It is an extension to ArcGIS that provides a simplified mapping interface. This interface uses pre-defined map templates and allows users with limited GIS skill to create high quality map products. Our presentation will provide a discussion of the Carto-Tools Program and a demonstration of MPS Atlas and the GI.
