Geographic Data Storage and Retrieval in a Multi-Agency, Multi-National Environment
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): Heather Phelps

The Humanitarian Information Unit (HIU) serves as a U.S. Government interagency center to identify, collect, analyze and disseminate unclassified information critical to the U.S. Government decision makers and partners in preparation for and response to humanitarian emergencies worldwide. As part of the dynamic environment in which the HIU works, data is received from a multitude of different sources. One of the HIU's challenges is to organize these disparate data into a production environment and to make that data available for dissemination through analytical products and share existing data with contributing parties. To accomplish this task, the HIU has a series of metadata creation and editing tools, an enterprise GeoDatabase, and a web site to view available data stores. The HIU data solution, best practices, and lessons learned will be discussed.
