Subway Infrastructure Mapping and Application Development
Track: Homeland Security/Homeland Defense
Author(s): Tim Keane

The "Subway Infrastructure Mapping and Application Development" project was initiated to provide critical data to the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) in support of planning and providing emergency operations for the Republican National Convention (RNC). A spatial dataset of the subway system and an application for viewing, printing and analyzing this data was developed for this purpose. The application and data were developed to be seamlessly integrated into OEM's existing geographic information system (GIS). Subway data from NYC Transit's maintenance department computer-aided design drawings (CADD) were reorganized and imported into an Esri personal geodatabase. The application was then packaged so that the software and data could be distributed together and easily installed on any computer utilizing Esri's industry-standard ArcGIS Desktop software. This enabled a number of federal agencies providing security and emergency response for the RNC to utilize the application as well.
