Abstract
Integrating Mapping and News to Aid Humanitarian Relief Efforts Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): Mark Jones Humanitarian relief agencies require mapping for a variety of reasons--aiding a fast response to sudden onset disasters, sharing information on who is doing what and where, communicating activities to staff and stakeholders and publicizing their work in the media. This paper will assess how GIS can be used to meet these needs. It will draw on AlertNet's experience of integrating news and mapping, in particular the use of automated textual analysis to provide appropriate maps for news stories. It will also draw on the views of the AlertNet membership of NGOs and other relief agencies on what they want GIS to provide in the future.
