Geo-Information for Urban Land-Use Planning in Kampala
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Shuaib Lwasa

Kampala is experiencing various problems including haphazard spatial developments, inadequate infrastructure, and increased poverty leading to deplorable living environment for 60 percent of the population. Although planning has been undertaken for 20 percent of the settlements, the gap between the planning outputs and the actual developments in the city is widening. The planning outputs have been developed using methods that are time and resource demanding with developments not following the preferred plans. This is because of the failure to control developments because of lack of precise location information. In the face of these challenges, alternative planning approaches are necessary for provision of accurate information and to support implementation. This paper focuses on a GIS-based model of urban land-use planning for suitability assessment of urban land use. The paper indicates the potential use of GIS in closing the gap created by inappropriate approaches for appropriate and better allocation of land for urban development.
