Digital Coast: Legislative Atlas for the Gulf of Mexico
Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management
Author(s): Jodie Towers

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Coastal Services Center is developing an Internet mapping application, the Legislative Atlas, to provide more efficient access to regional-scale geographic data. The Legislative Atlas will use Web services to access data hosted by government agencies and academic institutions, displaying framework data sets in one Internet mapping site. The Center, along with contracted company Photo Science, is developing spatial representations of federal and state legislation and jurisdictional boundaries, called georegulations, to display along with socioeconomic, physical, and biological resource data. The Legislative Atlas will include custom query tools that identify georegulations at user-specified locations. Supporting collaboration among regional, state, and federal agencies, the Legislative Atlas will assist resource managers and policy makers in sharing resources and implementing strategies to address environmental issues on a regional level. The Legislative Atlas for the Gulf of Mexico will be completed in the fall of 2006.
