Data Gathering with ArcPad and Data Modeling for U.S. Army
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Brigitte Steger

The U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR) Range and Training Land Program (RTLP) and Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program are responsible for modernizing U.S. Army Range Facilities Training Land in Europe and sustaining their environment to ensure enduring training and eventual return of land to host nation ownership. This paper discusses the process of data gathering with an outdoor mapping tool, ArcPad including transfer to a Spatial Data Standard for Facilities and Infrastructure Database (SDSFIE), the database standard adopted by the U.S. Army. This paper also discusses the data modeling and management of the SDSFIE database and GIS practices within USAREUR RTLP and ITAM. Cooperative strategies such as these enable greater return on Army GIS investment by reducing data redundancy, enabling wider data distribution, and allowing land managers to make more informed decisions about the future of U.S. Military installations in Europe.
