GIS Data Access and Technical Support at Princeton University
Track: Education
Author(s): Bill Guthe, Tsering Shawa

At Princeton University, GIS is used in departments ranging from art history to environmental engineering. Rather than being housed in a single department or school, GIS services are shared between the Library and the Office of Information Technology (OIT). The Library organizes data acquisitions, access and documentation, while the OIT manages licenses, software installations, and software-related questions.

Coordination between the Library and the OIT is critical to the success of this approach. Training sessions are offered jointly, introducing attendees to primary contacts from both locations. On-line resources are managed separately, but are coordinated to ensure consistent support. Users are encouraged to reach out to either primary contact. This allows us to see the overall needs of GIS users, and to balance the workload when necessary.

Examples of customized data access and documentation will be demonstrated, and GIS support services using Blackboard and other technologies will be shown.
