Practical GIS for a Small Water Utility
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Vu Nguyen, Julie Hanh

Many local governments and water utilities are not yet using the power of GIS to manage their critical infrastructure information. For some of these agencies, the scarcity of in-house information and the financial barrier of collecting data to predefined engineering and GIS data standards are proving to be deterrents. The Lake LBJ Municipal Utility District is a water and wastewater utility serving 3,000 accounts in the Hill Country of Texas. Prior to GIS implementation, the District possessed little electronic data, no GIS software, no server capable of storing a GIS database and no GPS/GIS data collection capabilities. The business case for acquiring these resources lay in the District's desire to implement a system to manage its daily operations and in preparation for asset valuation. Using an innovative phased data acquisition approach, the District now possesses a utility geodatabase and is managing its daily operations through a GIS-centric Infrastructure Management System.
