U.S. National Park Service Metadata Applications: Metadata Tools & Editor
Track: Parks and Natural Reserves
Author(s): Daniel Warner

The NPS Metadata Tools & Editor (Tools & Editor) is a National Park Service (NPS) application that extends the metadata functionality in Esri's ArcCatalog to meet NPS-specific needs. The Tools & Editor also integrates closely with the NR and GIS Data Store (Data Store) repository by facilitating metadata and data uploads. The next generation of the Tools & Editor currently under development utilizes Microsoft's .NET technology and Web services to provide seamless metadata editing and encrypted data and metadata exchange with the Data Store. User authentication/authorization and transaction security for the Web services will be provided using a combination of synchronous and asynchronous keys as described in the Oasis Web Service Security standard. Seamless integration between the Metadata Editor and the Data Store will empower users to more quickly and easily create, manage and distribute metadata.
