Tot Lots to National Parks: The New Generation of Protected Lands Data for CA
Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Ryan Branciforte

In early 2006, a GIS database of protected land in the San Francisco Bay region was completed. Containing almost one million acres in 4,500 holdings, owned by more than 150 agencies and nonprofits, the database covers everything from city parks to regional wilderness. Similar versions of this database are now being prepared for Southern California, the San Joaquin Valley and other parts of the state. A public Web portal to this data is also under development. Within a year, California will likely have the first ever comprehensive dataset of these lands.

The strategies and methods of developing this new generation of protected land inventories are complex, involving partnerships and collaborations with many agencies and organizations. This presentation will describe how GreenInfo Network, a nonprofit GIS support organization, created the dataset, what the data means for agencies and people in the state, and where such collaborative efforts are heading.
