Detection of Urban Expansion by Using Spatiotemporal Databases
Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management
Author(s): Ozgun Balkanay

Geographic data used in GIS is composed of times, places and attributes. Time component is generally fixed for representing the geographic data. Most mapped data demonstrates the situation of an instant, which was captured from the historical state of it.

Within the last decade temporal databases are on the agenda. The time component, which is accepted as 4th dimension, became a hot topic for developers in GIS industry.

In this paper a spatiotemporal GIS data management system is proposed to detect the urban expansion of the city of Istanbul within 30 years. A couple of Landsat images are used dated from 1972 to 2002.

In this study the main idea is to create a conceptual design of a spatiotemporal database to evaluate and analyze the expansion of the city in time. It is believed that valuable information for planners, decision makers and technology developers are gathered.
